FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of chronic, invisible, widespread, and unpredictable pain. It is not simply muscular pain. There are several components to FS: Neuroendocrine disruption, which is also a factor in anxiety and depression. Little or no Stage IV sleep, which reduces our capacity to heal. Locally painful tender points. Central Sensitization, which creates structural changes in the spinal cord and brain – more nociceptors (sensory receptors for painful stimuli), more pain-promoting neurotransmitters and fewer pain-filtering neurotransmitters, hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity and extreme response to pain), allodynia (all sensation is perceived as pain). This results in all our senses becoming amplified and hard to filter.

What can help?

Having had Fibromyalgia myself for decades, I understand the pain, the fatigue, the “fibro fog”, the fear, the depression, and all the other things that go along with this life-altering, and often debilitating, syndrome. The good news: there are non-pharmaceutical interventions that can help control symptoms, prevent flareups, and assist the body to heal. Research shows that Massage Therapy lowers perceived pain and provides better sleep quality, improved mood, and reduced anxiety and cortisol (stress hormone) levels. CranioSacral Therapy is one of the most recommended treatments for improving quality of life. Research also suggests that improvement in symptoms is most reliable when there is a minimum of five sessions. A study summary from the Massage Therapy Foundation found that twice-weekly massage had positive biologic changes in neuroendocrine function. Other FS patients reported great improvement with a series of three gently detoxifying body wraps received three days apart. And as always, FasciaBlasting is a go-to treatment. Fibromyalgia and all other chronic pain issues are symptoms of unhealthy fascia. Healing the fascia is the key to healing the body. However, sometimes the sympathetic nervous system has been “turned on” in a hyper-aware state for so long, using the tools can be too painful at first. (I know from experience; but I am now able to Blast without pain and control my symptoms without medication.) So, this treatment is designed as a starter series to improve the central sensitization that is characteristic of fibromyalgia by providing a calming sense of safety, soothing touch, deep relaxation, and unwinding of the CranioSacral system. It is also ideal for other chronic pain conditions or for anyone suffering from stress or anxiety.

Cocoon FS Body Treatment

Your treatment begins with a combination of slow, static, rhythmic, and rocking compression techniques on your shoulders, back, sacrum, arms, and legs, which will promote relaxation of the nervous system and soft tissues as well as improved circulation and healing within the muscles. A warm masque of Deep Moor mud is then applied to the back of the body. This potent healing medium helps to improve circulation, soothe aching muscles, reduce swelling in joints, draw and absorb toxins, and decrease inflammation. You will then turn over onto your back, and the compression massage and Moor application will be repeated for the front of the body. You will be wrapped in a plastic sheet, which prevents evaporation and opens the pores in the skin; as the plastic reflects heat back into the body, the minerals and nutrients from the Moor are able to penetrate even deeper into the tissues, increasing their effectiveness. On top of the plastic, you will be cocooned with blankets, producing a feeling of security and deep rest, and holding the natural heat from your body and from the table warmer within the wrap. Now that you are comfortably swaddled in the sheets and blankets, your therapist will use a gentle body rocking technique to help further calm the nervous system and relax muscles. Next, attention is given to releasing the fascia of the ankles and feet with FasciaBlasting (as tolerated), joint mobilization, and Reflexology massage. Then, the feet are also wrapped with the Moor. Next, tension in the scalp, face, and neck is relieved with FasciaBlasting (as tolerated), Reflexology massage, and CranioSacral Therapy. By releasing restrictions in the skeletal and fascial tissue of the cranium and spine, as well as other parts of the body, the cerebrospinal fluid can flow more freely, resulting in relief of pain and dysfunction and improvement in whole-body health. Gentle rocking is now employed once more to bring awareness back into the full body, the blankets are unwrapped, and the Moor is removed with comforting hot towels and Magnesium Calming Cream is massaged into the skin. Containing 21 essential minerals harvested from the Dead Sea, including Magnesium Chloride, this cream calms nerves and muscles, aids in the reduction of cramping and hypertonicity, and combats stress and fluid retention. To finish, the head, arms, and legs are once again gently rocked to open joints and bring the body into a feeling of balance. Now that the hands-on portion of the treatment is concluded, your package will end with a Sleep After session, giving you time alone to rest and process all the work that has just been done. As you lay on the heated treatment table, specially designed bolsters take pressure off the neck and back, while a weighted blanket provides gentle pressure, like a warm hug, that helps to calm and quiet the mind and body, creating deep ease in stress and pain.

Why did we choose Austrian Moor Mud for our treatments?

This nutrient-rich complex is derived from a multitude of herbs, plants and flowers and is revered for its therapeutic properties by both medical clinics and spas around the world. Prized for its natural healing ability, research has shown that Moor Essence can help to improve circulation, soothe aching muscles, and reduce swelling in joints. It’s many healing properties for the body and skin include:

Detox: High proportions of humic acid enable the Moor to help draw and absorb harmful substances that may be trapped in the tissues. Elimination of these substances is now widely recognized as an important component of health care maintenance and anti-aging.

Anti-inflammatory: The Moor has consistently been reported to exert a soothing effect on irritated or inflamed tissues.

Ion-Exchanging: The presence of humic acids causes an exchange reaction in which harmful positive ions in the tissues are replaced by revitalizing negative ions present within the Moor.

Nerve Stimulant: The fibers of the autonomic nervous system, lying between the epidermal cells, may be stimulated by the Moor.

High Heat Retention: The thermal properties of Moor enable the substance to retain and transmit heat over an extended period.

Bio-Available: Because many of the organic substances present within the moor are in a colloidal (suspension) form they are highly bio-available (easily absorbed by the body). Many of the inorganic substances (such as iron, copper, manganese, and zinc) are held in bivalent form making them molecularly small enough to also be easily absorbed.

Skin Repair: Rich in vitamins, minerals, klamath blue-green algae, and sea kelp extract to purify, nourish, soothe, and revitalize the skin.

Bactericidal Action: The presence of certain bio-active substances and beneficial microflora may help to recreate balance in the bacteriological environment of the body.

Hormonal: Phyto-hormone substances present within the Moor may help to stimulate the biotic function of the body and recreate balance in hormonal functioning.
